Property Rights

Who owns your property? This may seem like a silly question unless you have been paying attention to your City Council and Planning & Zoning Board the past few months.  I assume you think you own your property.  If not, you should.  You pay the bills to acquire it and maintain it.  Ownership, by definition, means that you have control over it and that you can use and enjoy the benefits produced by the property.   However, the city's interests apparently trump your interests and they have little regard for how their decisions may affect your use, control or enjoyment of your own property.  They don't seem to care that some of their decisions reduce the value of your property either.  What am I talking about?  Here are some recent examples:

  • Pole Sign Ban

  • The Parking Ordinances  (Updated)

  • The 9 1/2' Rule  (Updated)

  • Once again, this is only a short list of property issues in our city.  I will add to this list as time permits.  If you are aware of other glaring property rights abuses by our city, please let me know about them and I will attempt to document them here.
